Benefits of training karate

Karate Do means “Way of the empty hand”. It is a Japanese martial art. It teaches punches, kicks and throws in to stop an attacker in one single blow. Karate teaches self control. It should be used only for self defense or the defense of others.

The goal of Karate Do is to build a good virtuous character. Karate is more than a sport – it is a way of life. The Japan Karate Association (JKA) is the premier organization of Traditional Karate in the world.

Kihon (Basics)

The fundamentals of karate.

Kata (Forms)

Kata is the heart and soul of karate.

Kata teaches focus and coordination. Karate movements are compression, expansion, tension, and relaxation.

The karateka can spend a lifetime in pursuit of  perfection of  technique in kata

In Kata competition, athletic and technical prowess are evaluated by judges who declare a winner via decision

Kumite (Sparring)

In Kumite, two athletes face each other.

The goal is to score an Ippon (much like in Judo or in Kendo); an Ippon occurs when a single blow is struck with power and precision at the right time and  with the right distance.

A half-Ippon or Waza Ari can be awarded to a strike that has proper time and distance but lacks other attributes.

In Kumite, punches, kicks, throws and sweeps are allowed.

To achieve a score, the athlete must pull back power on the strike to protect the opponent, to do otherwise results in a warning or even disqualification.

Karate is about self control.

Bunkai (Application)

Deconstruct traditional forms to learn effective tactics for self-defense.
